Meckering Former Townsite Walk Trail
The Meckering Earthquake Historic Walk Trail takes you on a journey through the old town centre. This walk is a stark reminder of the enormity of this natural disaster to a once thriving community.
At 10.59a.m., on 14 October 1968 Meckering was destroyed by a 6.5 magnitude earthquake. Prior to the earthquake the Meckering town contained 51 occupied dwellings, 12 private business premises and 15 buildings devoted to government, public or sporting uses. Only 16 houses and 3 business premises survived the earthquake.
